That does not necessarily mean the club will not evaluate new players.

How to Get Scouted by Tacoma Defiance

Tacoma Defiance develops players for professional competition and provides a pathway toward the Seattle Sounders first team.

Players interested in joining should understand the level of competition and prepare materials that demonstrate their ability to contribute in a professional environment.

If you want to pursue an opportunity with Tacoma Defiance:

1. Prepare recent match footage. Show your performance against competitive opposition, including full-match footage when available.

2. Create a professional player résumé. Include your age, position, current club, league, playing history, and relevant accomplishments.

3. Research Tacoma Defiance's recruitment pathways. Understand how players from college, MLS academies, and other clubs have joined the team.

4. Identify relevant coaching and technical staff. Research the individuals responsible for coaching, development, and player evaluation.

5. Contact the appropriate person professionally. Ask whether the club accepts player submissions or has any upcoming evaluation opportunities.

Contacting a coach does not guarantee a response, trial, or professional contract.

Can You Join Tacoma Defiance Without Playing for Seattle Sounders Academy?

Yes. Tacoma Defiance has signed players from outside the Seattle Sounders academy system.

In February 2026, the club announced the signings of three former college soccer players to professional MLS NEXT Pro contracts:

Joe Dale also played for USL League Two club Ballard FC before signing with Tacoma Defiance.

These signings demonstrate that the club evaluates talent from outside its own academy pathway.

Can UPSL or USL League Two Players Join Tacoma Defiance?

Players from amateur and pre-professional leagues may pursue professional opportunities, but there is no guaranteed pathway from a particular league into Tacoma Defiance.

The club has recruited players with USL League Two experience, including Joe Dale, who played for Ballard FC, and Mark O'Neill, who previously played for Vermont Green FC.

Tacoma also signed Rafa Jauregui after he played in the USL Championship with Sacramento Republic FC and USL League One with Charlotte Independence.

These examples show that Tacoma considers players from different competitive backgrounds.

However, previous signings do not establish that the club is currently recruiting from any particular league or accepting unsolicited trials.

Tacoma Defiance vs. Seattle Sounders Academy

Tacoma Defiance and Seattle Sounders Academy are different stages of the organization's player development system.

Tacoma Defiance — MLS NEXT Pro: A professional development team where players compete in MLS NEXT Pro and may progress toward Seattle Sounders FC.

Seattle Sounders Academy: A youth development program focused on identifying and developing younger players.

Some academy players progress into professional opportunities with Tacoma Defiance, but the team also recruits players from outside the academy.
